Féroces are a Besançon, France based trio consisting of Jérôme Josselin, Sébastien Descamps and François Schauber who have energised European audiences for over a decade with Stellardrive, ASIDEFROMADAY, Hiro and in particular pulverising post-hardcore/screamo legends Gantz.
Féroces though rooted in burning post-rock/post-metal melancholia are conceptually and compositionally working with a far more eclectic palette which embraces catchy song writing, a new wave feel and brings the emotional discharge of French arthouse cinema masterpieces like Claude Chabrol’s disturbing “Betty” and Jean-Luc Godard’s decadent “Vivre Sa Vie” to the forefront. Microfilm and From Monument To Masses dabbled with the formula in the early-to-mid 2000s but here on their first EP titled “Juliette”, Féroces masterfully execute it in thrilling fashion like it has never been heard before, with Cube Studio definitely deserving vociferous plaudits for the outstanding sound editing and overall production.
Five cuts, each one drenched in analogue warmth and an edgy, dramatic cinematic sound. The creeping tension slowly building towards a cliff-hanger ending on the opener “Même Ça Tu N’as Pas Le Courage” immediately takes hold of the listener as the characters’ intimacy is laid bare enveloped in stunning sonics. This however is just a curtain opener as the incensed dialogue flares throughout “Juliette” only subsiding for a short time during the beautiful melancholia of “Tout est beau”. The tension and distress return on “N’ayez pas peur j’ai l’habitude” shrouded in mystery before the touching and powerful finale of “Je Veux Pas Mourir Avant D’être Morte”.
With artwork by Flo / Impure Muzik evoking the French New Wave by featuring one of Jean-Luc Godard’s muses – the stunning Anna Karina – it will be no surprise to see this scintillating EP mentioned as one of year’s best. The honour and acclaim would be meritorious. Essential!
